A new book published by the Royal Institute of British Architects [RIBA] features contributions from Scott Brownrigg’s Helen Taylor and Albena Atanassova. ‘Defining Contemporary Professionalism: For Architects in Practice and Education’, edited by Alan Jones and Rob Hyde, offers a series of curated essays by high-profile architecture and design leaders and educators on the topic of professionalism.

The book focuses on delivering the increased professional skills curriculum content within architecture schools as set by the RIBA. With an introduction by the Editors, this book explores what contemporary professionalism within architecture is, and its future, encouraging the current and future profession to address professionalism across the industry.

Scott Brownrigg Director of Practice, Helen Taylor, has written a chapter with Peter Garstecki, Associate at Foster + Partners, on the need and aspirations for the new apprenticeships in architecture. The pair worked together in close collaboration with the wider Architecture Trailblazer team to deliver modern apprenticeships in Architecture. Scott Brownrigg’s first apprentices have just completed the pilot year and a new cohort commence this month.

Associate Albena Atanassova has contributed a chapter on next generation architects and the qualities of the profession beyond ARB/RIBA codes in ever-changing contexts. Albena is a Board member of the Young Architects and Developers Alliance (YADA), part of the RIBA Validation Panels to schools of architecture, a member of the RIBA Student Support Fund Committee and she joins Helen as a UK Construction Week 2019 Role Model.

The publication is released in September 2019 and coincides with the start of Alan Jones’ presidency of the RIBA. It can be ordered here.
