The end of 2021 heralded a new era in Scott Brownrigg’s ownership structure as we transitioned from an Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). A major milestone in our 112-year history, which has seen the Practice evolve from a Partnership, to a Limited Company operating with an Employee Benefit Trust (EBT) since 1993, to an EOT.
The transition is fundamental to achieving our ambitions for the business vision and strategy for now and the future. Supporting the next generation of ownership of the business, it provides the right platform for the business to succeed in the future, and importantly it will maintain and secure the legacy of Scott Brownrigg for future generations – perhaps even for another 112 years!
It will by a Trustee Board that consists of Chief Executive Darren Comber, Chief Financial Officer, Ilze Williamson; independent Chair – Richard England and Employee Trust Members Jason Lebidineuse and Jack Williamson.
CEO Darren Comber said of the new structure:
“Scott Brownrigg has a heritage that spans decades and can be traced back to Annesley H. Brownrigg forming a practice in 1910 before the Partners; Duncan Scott, John Brownrigg and Newman Turner, whose names the company bares, formed the current practice of Scott Brownrigg & Turner in 1958. The rich history thereafter has been widely documented, seeing a small provincial practice historically based in Haslemere in Surrey, eventually flourish into the practice we know today as one of the UK’s top AJ100 architectural practices and ranked in the World Architecture top 100 Architects in the world, with studios in; London, New York, Singapore, Amsterdam, Guildford, Cardiff and Edinburgh.
Providing a framework for effective career development and succession is one of the most challenging and important areas that any architectural practice faces in planning for the future. Ensuring there are opportunities for progression is fundamental to both individual satisfaction and the development of the practice.
The decision to transition to an EOT was fundamentally aligned with the desire to meet key components to be able to fulfil the drivers and ambitions of the business vision and strategy; support the next generation of ownership of the business; provide the right platform for the business to succeed in the future; and maintain and secure the legacy of Scott Brownrigg for future generations.
This is a major milestone in the enduring history of Scott Brownrigg to continue collectively building the practice of the future.”
