Our Interiors team have created a ‘newsroom of the future’ for global news provider Thomson Reuters, reflecting the company’s rich heritage of innovation for reporting the news. The newsroom forms the culmination of four fit-out projects delivered at 5 Canada Square, London, over the last seven years.
Design Strategy Unit carried out a series of detailed workshops and engagement sessions to understand the specific requirements of each team within the newsroom. Based on these findings, the internal layout enhances the work setting by carefully collocating various news teams to improve communication and increase the speed of news flow.
The new state-of-the-art newsroom is predominately-open plan, with workstations orientated towards a Master Control Room (MCR) multi-screen at the centre of the space. This provides the team visibility of a news story as it breaks and allows for quick and effective sharing of information with their audiences. The editorial team can observe the entire operation from a central meeting room, flanked by scrum spaces for brainstorming sessions.
The layout also supports multimedia collaboration with a variety of meeting rooms and settings that double up as on-floor studio spaces; providing a more informal backdrop for interviews when required. Two broadcast studios feature the highest standards of anti-vibration, lighting control and acoustic separation, with access to a dedicated green room and makeup facilities.
Delivered during the pandemic, the newsroom remained operational with a reduced team throughout the construction process. Now complete, the new facility enables the successful delivery of breaking news with media clients, partners and consumers via text, picture and video formats.
John Clery, Director of Design and Construct and Engineering Emea, Thomson Reuters said: “Scott Brownrigg have proved to be an invaluable partner in the recreation of our new newsroom of the future. Significant challenges were faced along the way, including space efficiency. The team demonstrated considerable dedication and remained enthusiastic throughout the journey. Very talented individuals which is evident in the quality of the outcome.”
