Dawlish Station
To deliver Access For All (AFA) architectural designs, a heritage statement and heritage specification for Planning Permission and Listed Building Consents. To retain and refurbish existing station buildings and canopies, and reinstate the downside building waiting rooms.
Dawlish station is a Grade II listed building dating from ca. 1846 and was rebuilt following a fire in 1875. Both the station and railway line are built next to the sea wall, and have suffered storm damage due their proximity to the sea. A new overbridge with associated stairs, lifts and plant rooms will be set apart from the listed station buildings, with lift shafts aligned with platforms to maximise passenger movement space at platform level. Due to the location and design of the new structures, the station buildings retain their significance.
The station refurbishment and AFA project, quality and programme benefits will be delivered through offsite fabrication of the large-scale pre-fabricated sea wall, overbridge, stairs and lift shaft structures. This proposal accommodates the required structural wave loading from the seaward side and as a result, achieves design quality within challenging programme and budgetary constraints.
