The Brief

We won a two stage architectural competition that was run by the client (Celtic Manor Resort) and Welsh Government. The project was to provide new conference facilities to far extend the resort's existing functions which would provide international convention centre accommodation for 5,000 delegates in various configurations.

Concept

The concept was for the building to be a ‘ground-scraper’ - architecture that was landscape art as much as building.

The two principal volumes (auditorium and main hall) were conceived as slate prisms - inspired by the industrial heritage of Newport and the traditional Welsh burial chamber. The facility was to be the third slate jewel on the M4 necklace following on from the Maritime museum in Swansea and the Concert Hall in Cardiff.

Features

The conference centre is the largest in Wales and the south west of England and includes a 4,000 sq m open plan hall that can be divided into six independent spaces, a 1500 seat raked auditorium, and six other dedicated venues with the capacity to host a wide range of group sizes. The support spaces provide break-out facilities with additional flexibility contributing to the overall flexibility of the convention centre.
