The Brief

We were responsible for the design and planning of the new home of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery at Napier Lines in Woolwich, to accommodate 170 horses and the troop’s historic WWII gun carriages.

Concept

Our design set out to create “carbon minus” facilities. Together with the stabling, associated workshops/stores and provision for the gun carriages, an indoor riding school with viewing gallery, museum, gun park and regimental offices were provided. We also incorporated extensive equine training areas with a ménage and canter track and forming up area for the mounted troop and gun carriages.

Features

Sustainability was the driving feature of the development. We incorporated a ground breaking biomass plant using horse manure and bedding for fuel, as well as solar chimneys for natural stack ventilation of the stables, rainwater harvesting and sustainable urban drainage systems attenuating surface water flows from the site. The development achieved BREEAM “Excellent”.

The project was shortlisted for the RTPI Planning Excellence Award for Best Planning for Natural and Built Heritage.
